James Baldwin: the Price of the Ticket

  1. This video is so great and really shows who James Baldwin was as a person. He’s a well-known writer and poet, but the interviews give a sense of what he was really like when he was alive. The video starts off and instantly I go back and watch the first couple parts again, because his quotes are so powerful and honest that I want to remember them. I love when he basically says that no label or slogan or political party or religion or skin color is more important than the actual human being. He said this statement decades ago, but it still is relevant today. Especially in our society today, labels are everything. They divide us as a country constantly. Many people won’t associate with others because they may be different. A Christian might not become friends with someone just because they are Muslim, and vice versa. A couple may be out on a first date, but the guy decides not to call her back because she’s a Republican. A family may not move into a certain part of town because their race wouldn’t be the majority. This is ludicrous. It was ludicrous back then, and is ludicrous even more today because we have come so far. I’m so glad this video was posted, because we have a lot to learn from Mr. James Baldwin, still to this day.
