I like how Lennon uses this song to describe how women are oppressed much like African-Americans are. One of the lines in the song is "If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us." This is trying to convey that males do not appreciate the love of women unless they act as a slave to them. He is trying to point out the fact that women are stereotyped as being dependant on the male, but however the real message of the song is that we need to recognize women as people. He relates them to negroes because it is the same kind of oppression for them, that they are not able to function on their own within society. He uses this song to change the hearts of the listeners and to change the stereotype on women that they are weak and vulnerable. Women and African-Americans should have just as much respect as an independant as any other human being. I think this is Lennon at his best, striving for equality in all senses of the word.
To interpret the word as a group of people that are oppressed instead of refering to black is an interesting take on the word.
